What is mobile esports?

What is mobile esports?

Simply put, esport refers to any competition in a video game, whether individual or team-based. Its mobile variant uses exactly the same principle, except that the games are played not on computers or consoles, but on smartphones.

Although this is still a relatively young field, a number of particularly popular competitive mobile games are already emerging. These include :

  • PUBG Mobile ;
  • Call of Duty: Mobile ;
  • Clash Royale ;
  • Mobile Legends: Bang Bang, and many more.

Factors behind the rise of mobile esports

The main factor behind the growing popularity of mobile esports is the meteoric evolution of technology. Every year, mobile devices become more powerful, to the point where their features are already approaching those of desktop PCs. At the same time, the growing coverage of the 5G network is making it possible to benefit from an ultra-fast Internet connection.

An equally decisive factor is cost. Not everyone can afford a latest-generation console or a top-of-the-range gaming PC, whereas buying a smartphone and paying for an Internet package is affordable for virtually everyone. What's more, the price of even the most popular mobile games is still relatively low, and some are even available free of charge.

As a result, mobile e-sports is already enjoyed by tens of millions of people around the world, from Europe and North America to Africa and South-East Asia. And this number will only increase over time.

Top mobile esports organisations

There aren't as many mobile esports organisations as there are traditional ones. However, only a few of them focus exclusively on one or more mobile games - some combine them with already mainstream e-sports, such as DOTA 2, CS: Go, etc.

The following table shows the main mobile esports teams in Europe, North America and Asia. And we think the French will be pleased to read that the European continent is dominated by their country's representatives.

Team Vitality French esports organisation with teams in various games, including Call of Duty: Mobile and Mobile Legends: Bang Bang.
Tribe Gaming American organisation specialising in mobile esports, fielding teams in games such as Brawl Stars, Clash Royale and Call of Duty: Mobile.
EVOS Esports A leading organisation with a strong track record in Mobile Legends and PUBG Mobile, making a significant contribution to the mobile esports scene.

Upcoming major mobile esports tournaments in 2025

In 2025, esport fans can look forward to a number of mobile gaming tournaments. The biggest of these will be held in Saudi Arabia, and that's no coincidence: that's where the season will culminate, with the Olympic Esports Games 2025.

These games will be the first of their kind: previously, the IOC could only organise Olympic esport weeks and series. We have summarised other important events in the table below.

PUBG Mobile Global Open (PMGO) Scheduled for March and April 2025 in Uzbekistan, this tournament will bring together the best teams to qualify from the PMGO qualifiers.
Mobile Legends: Bang Bang Mid-Season Cup (MSC) 2025 Scheduled for mid-July to early August 2025 in Saudi Arabia, this event replaces the former Southeast Asian Cup and is a major international championship.
Esports World Cup 2025 Held in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, this event will feature a variety of games, including Free Fire, Honor of Kings, Counter-Strike 2 and DOTA 2, with a total prize pool of at least $30 million.
Olympic Esports Games 2025 The inaugural event will be held in Saudi Arabia, marking the inclusion of traditional esports titles in the Olympic Games.
